香水的香味會隨著時間而有所變化，是因為每種香氣成分的揮發速度不一樣，所以精油被劃分為前中後調三種不同調性。

前調

｜大約是在10-20分鐘左右所散發出來的香氣，就是我們聞到的第一個揮之不去的味道

｜通常是由比較小的分子所構成

中調

｜約在30~40分鐘後出現，一般來說會持續大約數小時甚至更久，是香水中的核心

｜由比較大的分子所構成

後調 (又稱基調)

｜大約在2 ~ 3小時左右會出現，持續一段很長的時間，是香水靈魂展現最後的餘韻

｜是由最大的分子所構成
